Subject Numbers Regarding Health Provider Authorizations

May 14, 2024

Please see March 2024 Removals from the List of Authorized Providers (MS Excel) for removals from the list of health care providers authorized to treat injured workers and/or perform independent medical examinations (IMEs) within the New York State workers' compensation system.

Pursuant to Workers' Compensation Law § 13-b, no person shall treat injured workers or conduct IMEs under this chapter without such authorization by the Chair. Health care providers must be licensed and registered with the New York State Education Department in order to maintain their Workers' Compensation Board authorization(s).

The removals list is based upon information provided by the New York State Education Department, identifying health care providers who do not currently have an active license to practice medicine in New York State and includes providers who have failed to renew their authorization to treat injured workers or to conduct IMEs with the Board's Medical Director's Office.

These health care providers are prohibited from treating injured workers and/or from performing IMEs. Reports submitted by these health care providers for services rendered prior to the effective date are valid but are invalid for any services rendered on or after that date. Requests to cross-examine any of these health care providers for services rendered prior to the effective date should not be denied due to the removal of their authorization(s). To locate a currently authorized treating provider or IME, you may search the Board website here: NYS WCB - Health Care Provider Search.

Authorization to treat is designated by the letter "W" at the end of the authorization number. Authorization to perform IMEs is designated by the letter "I" at the end of the authorization number. Authorization to treat and perform IMEs is designated by the letter "B" at the end of the authorization number.

Provider types are designated by the letter at the beginning of their authorization number as follows:

Acupuncturists Begins with "AC"
Chiropractors Begins with "C"
Licensed Clinical Social Workers Begins with "SW"
Nurse Practitioners Begins with "N"
Occupational Therapists Begins with "OT"
Physical Therapists Begins with "PT"
Physicians No letter designation
Physician Assistants Begins with "PA"
Podiatrists Begins with "P"
Psychologists Begins with "S"

Further information regarding Board authorized provider types may be found on the How to Become a NYS Workers' Compensation Board Authorized Provider page.

Any questions regarding the authorized lists should be referred to the Medical Director's Office at (800) 781-2362.
